Black Lives Matter

The Students’ Union of Vancouver Community College (SUVCC) sends our hearts to the family and friends of Regis Korchinski-Paquet, George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, and the countless people of colour who have senselessly lost their lives due to police brutality in both Canada and United States.

The SUVCC stands against racism, discrimination, and injustice. We stand with those fighting against the structural systems that have been propagating discrimination and inequalities against the black community and people of colour. We do not and will not tolerate acts of racism and discrimination.

It is important to acknowledge that Canada is not exempt from the ongoing violence when our colonial systems have been built on systemic racism and violence against Indigenous Peoples. It is imperative to reflect and educate on how we are benefiting in existing systems and pursue a path of unlearning ingrained racism. We need to consider ways we can help break down systems of inequality towards the black community in our daily lives. This can start with listening and hearing out voices that have been silenced. You can add your voice to help the movement through your own individual platforms, every voice counts in fighting against racism.

To all our members, we want to assure you that we are committed to supporting anti-racism, anti-discrimination, and anti-violence in the work we do every day. We will continue to work towards breaking down systems of inequalities and building safer spaces.
